What Is a Psychiatrist?

Psychiatrists specialize in diagnosing and treating individuals with mental illness. Unlike psychologists, psychiatrists are medical doctors — usually with an M.D. or D.O. — that have completed a four-year residency in psychiatry. Because they are doctors, psychiatrists are also able to prescribe medication, while psychologists are not.

Psychiatrists, alongside our certified nurse practitioners, can diagnose and manage treatment plans for a range of complex mental illnesses, including:

  • Addiction and Substance Use Disorders
  • Acute Stress Disorder
  • Anxiety
  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Bipolar Disorders
  • Borderline Personality Disorder
  • Conduct Disorders
  • Depression
  • Impulse Control
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Schizophrenia

Psychiatrists may specialize in a specific area of expertise, for example, forensic psychiatry, adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, emergency psychiatry, or eating disorders. These specializations often require additional training and experience.

Psychiatrist Vs Medication Management Support

When to Seek Psychiatrist Support

Individuals who need help to boost their mental health are sometimes embarrassed because of the stigma that is still associated with treatment. However, it is important to seek the support of a psychiatrist when symptoms of a mental illness begin to show, and before they reach a crisis point.

Some symptoms, such as a panic attack or hearing voices, may appear suddenly. Others, however, may increase over a long period, such as feelings of hopelessness or the inability to deal with daily life.

Possible Symptoms Include:

When to Seek Medication Management Support

  • Thoughts of self-harm or suicidal thoughts
  • Extreme mood changes
  • Obsessive thoughts
  • Detachment from reality or hallucinations
  • Withdrawal from friends and family
  • Excessive anger or violent outbursts
  • Excessive feelings or worry
  • Excessive social anxiety
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Panic attacks
  • Changes in eating habits
  • Significant fatigue or low energy
  • Trouble relating to people or situations
  • Erratic sleeping patterns or restlessness
  • Problems with alcohol or drug use
  • Hearing voices

If needed, we will prescribe medication and monitor how it affects you mentally, emotionally, and physically.
