Cameron Health has expanded its hospital campus with the Cameron Joyce & Al Gutstein Education & Innovation Center, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to advancing healthcare education and training to meet the region’s growing needs. This supports our mission by serving as a hub of healthcare expertise, fostering strategic partnerships with Trine University, local schools, first responders, and community organizations to offer specialized programs in high-demand healthcare professions like nursing and make a direct impact on our community.
Addressing the Nursing Demand
In collaboration with Trine University’s ASN nursing program, this program addresses the critical nursing shortage in our region. By 2030, new registered nurse positions in northeast Indiana are projected to increase by 10%, reflecting the demand to replace retiring nurses. Specifically in Steuben County, new RN job openings are anticipated, and the need will be higher, considering 28% of RNs in our county are at or near retirement age. Our partnership not only meets this demand but also creates local career opportunities for graduates, building a sustainable healthcare workforce.
From 2020 to 2022, Trine University received almost 100 inquiries for a prelicensure nursing program. Partnering with them in this program will prove to be incredibly beneficial in addressing Indiana’s nursing shortage and filling the gap in healthcare, as well as providing local students with the opportunity to expand their education and give back to their hometown. The benefits of this partnership are twofold: students will have unprecedented access to careers at Cameron post-graduation, and Cameron will build a talent pipeline that will allow us to better serve our community.
Community Impact
The Education and Innovation Center underscores our commitment to expanding healthcare services in Steuben County. With an anticipated 10% growth in new RN job openings, this facility enhances local workforce capabilities and elevates the quality of care. This investment not only fosters economic growth but also ensures that healthcare remains a cornerstone of our community.
Investment and Partnership
Funded through a public-private partnership, including $3 million from local and state governments, philanthropic contributions via the Cameron Foundation, and Cameron’s Capital Funds, the center stands as a testament to community collaboration and support.
Innovation and Education
Working closely with Cameron’s education team and Trine’s ASN program facilitators, we aim to continuously innovate and expand educational offerings. This initiative supports our mission to nurture future healthcare leaders and meet evolving healthcare needs. The education team is comprised of Certified Healthcare Simulation Educators, who are crucial for delivering high-quality education aligned with best practices in healthcare education for both professionals and students.
