A: Gastroenterologists are physicians who specialize in diagnosis and management of a broad spectrum of digestive system disorders, ranging from mild symptoms to complex gastrointestinal diseases. Treatment approaches may include dietary and lifestyle modifications, pharmacologic therapies and diagnostic or therapeutic procedures such as upper endoscopy and colonoscopy.
Q: When to see a Gastroenterologist?
A: You may benefit from seeing a gastroenterologist if you experience symptoms or have conditions affecting your digestive system. Common reasons for referral include:
- Blood in the stool or black, tarry stools
- Changes in bowel habits, such as chronic diarrhea or constipation
- Chronic heartburn or acid reflux (GERD)

- Evaluation of liver or pancreatic disorders
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or other functional digestive disorders
