Patient Experiences
Everyone in the ER was so attentive and kind with everything. I knew they were so busy when I came in, but that didn’t change anything; they still gave me the best care, and I felt like I was the only one there.” – S.H.
Frequently Asked Emergency Care Questions
Q: What is emergency medicine?
A: Emergency medicine focuses on treating sudden illness, injury, or disease, typically in an ER or trauma center, though it can be practiced anywhere.
Q: When should I bring a loved one or myself to the emergency room?
A: Call 911 or your local emergency number immediately if someone shows any of these symptoms:
- Choking
- Stopped breathing
- Head injury
- Neck or spine injury
- Electric shock or lightning strike
- Severe burn
- Severe chest pain or pressure
- Severe shortness of breath
- Seizure lasting longer than one minute
- Sudden loss of speech, vision, walking or movement
- Sudden weakness or drooping on one side of the body
Q: What happens when I go to the emergency department?
A: Upon arrival at the emergency department, hospital staff will greet you and ask simple questions such as:
- Your name
- Your date of birth
- What brought you in
After these questions, you’ll be taken to a treatment room or patient care area where you will be triaged by a nurse.
Q: What is the triage process?
A: Triage is the process of prioritizing treatment based on the severity of a patient’s condition. Upon arrival in the emergency department, a triage nurse will assess your vitals and perform a preliminary evaluation. Wait time is then determined by your clinical needs.
Q: How long will I have to wait?
A: Our team works to see patients as quickly as possible. Wait times depend on several factors, including the number of patients and the severity of conditions. If your symptoms worsen or you need assistance while waiting, please inform a staff member.
Q: What should I bring with me to the emergency department?
A: For your ER visit, we recommend that you bring the following items if you have them. However, you will not be denied care if you don’t have these items.
- List of current medications
- List of allergies
- Insurance card(s) and co-pay
- Photo ID
- Emergency contact information
Q: Why did I receive a separate bill from the provider who took care of me during my emergency visit at Cameron?
A: While the facility, supplies, and staff are all part of Cameron, the emergency providers are part of Professional Emergency Physicians (PEP), a group specializing in emergency medicine who serves hospitals across northeast Indiana.
Can I call the Emergency Care Department?
A: Medical advice cannot be given over the phone. If you are experiencing severe illness or injury call 911 or visit the nearest emergency care location.
