For 100 years, Cameron Hospital has been a cornerstone of care, compassion, and service for the Steuben County community. As Cameron celebrates a century of healthcare in 2026, we reflect not only on the history of the organization, but on the people, milestones, and moments that shaped the journey from a small local hospital into the modern healthcare system we know today.
The story of Cameron began in 1919 when Dr. Don F. Cameron returned to Steuben County after completing medical school. With a vision for advancing healthcare in the region, he founded Cameron Hospital in 1926 after purchasing the Hendry “octagon home” for $2,200. The facility created Angola’s first dedicated space for advanced surgical equipment and organized emergency care. Just one year later, Cameron admitted its first patient, beginning a legacy of care that would continue for generations.
Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, healthcare rapidly evolved. Cameron witnessed the shift from home births to hospital maternity care and adopted revolutionary antibiotic and sulfa drug treatments that transformed medicine. During this time, healthcare services in the region also expanded with the establishment of Elmhurst Hospital in Angola by Dr. Lester L. Eberhart in 1945.
The decades that followed brought significant growth and transformation. In 1972, Cameron Hospital and Elmhurst Hospital merged to form Cameron Memorial Community Hospital, strengthening healthcare services across the region. Just a few years later, the community rallied together during a major fundraising campaign that helped support the construction of a new $4.3 million hospital facility in 1977. The new building modernized healthcare delivery with expanded labs, diagnostics, and updated patient care spaces.
From the 1980s through the 1990s, Cameron continued expanding services to meet the changing needs of the community. Outpatient care and emergency services grew significantly, including a major emergency department expansion and the addition of a rooftop helipad to support air ambulance transportation. Cameron also expanded services beyond hospital walls through childcare initiatives, urgent care services, and senior living options like Cameron Woods.
The 2000s ushered in a new era of modernization, specialty care, and technological advancement. In 2008, hospital leadership announced plans for a completely new replacement hospital after recognizing that the aging 1970s facility could no longer efficiently support modern healthcare standards. That vision became reality in 2015 with the opening of a state-of-the-art replacement hospital in downtown Angola, featuring all private patient rooms and advanced medical technology designed to improve patient experience and quality of care.
Over the last decade, Cameron expanded access to specialty healthcare through the continued growth of Cameron Medical Group. In 2024, Cameron further strengthened its regional partnerships by opening the Joyce & Al Gutstein Education & Innovation Center to support workforce development and community education in partnership with Trine University.
In 2025, the organization officially rebranded to Cameron Health – reflecting the continued evolution of healthcare services beyond the traditional hospital setting and emphasizing a broader commitment to community wellness and healthcare access.
As part of the 100-year celebration, historical photos and artifacts were displayed to showcase the incredible evolution of Cameron throughout the decades. It was especially meaningful to welcome members of Dr. Don F. Cameron’s family, who traveled from across the country to celebrate this historic milestone. Dr. Cameron’s great-grandson, also named Don F. Cameron, shared heartfelt stories about his family and the lasting impact of Cameron’s mission over the years.
Over the last century, it is estimated that Cameron has served more than 7.5 million people. Behind that number are generations of caregivers, employees, volunteers, physicians, leaders, patients, and families who each played a role in shaping Cameron’s story. From welcoming new life and caring for families during difficult moments to embracing innovation and expanding access to care, Cameron’s history is ultimately a story about people caring for people.
While much has changed over the last 100 years, Cameron’s mission remains the same: providing compassionate, high-quality care close to home. As we celebrate this historic milestone, we honor the past with gratitude while looking ahead with excitement for the future. Thank you to everyone who has been part of Cameron’s story. We look forward to the next 100 years.
